If you look around the internet to find inspiration for a new chandelier you will find many examples of art deco chandeliers. Some are contemporary chandeliers inspired by art deco while others are original pieces from the 1920s and 1930s. As Art Deco originated in France you will find that many are referred to as a French art deco chandelier.
There is a large variety of styles and shapes (and prices!) and art deco chandeliers seem to come in different materials too (although they are more likely to be made of “modern” materials such as metal, stainless steel, aluminium or bakelite). So you can have fun choosing one.
Art Deco was born in Paris soon after the First World War (although the name Art Deco was given to the style about 40 years later). It was an extremely influential design style not only in the fields of fashion and interior design but also in architecture (if you want to see a wonderful example of Art Deco in architecture look no further than the Chrysler Building in New York). Art Deco symbolised the Roaring Twenties.
Art Deco was a modern style that used geometric shapes as decorative motifs it was equally influenced by the art and architecture of ancient civilisations as by modern art movements such as Cubism and Futurism. Art Deco has influenced fashion, interior design, product design, home decoration and architecture ever since. Therefore a good Art Deco chandelier would not look out of place in many homes. If you want to buy an original piece ensure you go to a reputable antique dealer, Art Deco objects were not made for the millions and represented indulgence, individualism and luxury and were exclusive and expensive even at the time. Items were often only created in very small numbers if they were not unique. You will be able to find Art Deco inspired chandeliers of the time or made in later decades (Art Deco was disliked after the Second World War until about 1965). Contemporary chandeliers are also occasionally made in an Art Deco style and the market is full of replicas. Whether you want to have an original item, a replica or an Art Deco inspired chandelier it will be entirely your own decision but you are strongly advised to do some research , especially if you are planning to invest a considerable amount of money on an antique chandelier.
